At Viomar Holdings, we believe in the power of education and its ability to transform lives and communities. Recently, Viomar’s Gift, our non-profit arm, had the honour of working on a crucial project with Xavier School in Banjul, Gambia. This initiative highlights our commitment to supporting education in regions where state funding falls short.
The Challenge
In Gambia, education is often underfunded by the state, leaving many schools reliant on donations to operate. Xavier School has faced these challenges head-on, with incredibly dedicated staff sometimes going without pay to ensure that children’s education is not compromised. The school has historically struggled with financial instability, making it difficult to provide consistent educational opportunities.
The Solution
Recognising the need for a sustainable solution, Viomar’s Gift, together with Avril Grant, worked closely with the school governors to identify ways to make Xavier School self-sustaining. After extensive deliberation and financial planning, it was decided to invest in two key revenue-generating facilities:
- Printing Facility: This will not only serve Xavier School but also neighbouring schools and businesses, creating a steady stream of income.
- Hall with Stage: This multipurpose space can be rented out for functions and events, providing another reliable revenue source.
These facilities are designed to supplement the nominal school fees and ensure the school’s financial stability.
The Impact
We are proud to announce that Viomar’s Gift has donated the necessary funds to build these facilities, marking a significant milestone for Xavier School. For the first time since its inception, the school is now fully self-sustaining. This achievement guarantees that future generations will have access to uninterrupted, quality education.
Reflection
This project has been profoundly rewarding and has underscored how much we take for granted. Shaun Sookoo, Viomar CEO commented, “In many parts of the world, including our own, we seldom worry about schools closing due to lack of funds or teachers going unpaid. The resilience and dedication of the staff at Xavier School are truly inspirational, and their commitment ensures that the children of Banjul receive the education they deserve.”
Looking Forward
Viomar’s Gift remains committed to supporting educational initiatives that create lasting impact. Viomar Holdings believe that by fostering self-sustaining educational environments, we can contribute to the development and stability of communities around the world.
